LECTURE TITLE: “Unusual Gemstones“ – When most people think of gemstones, it’s usually the precious stones (diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald) or one of the birthstones some of which are semiprecious.
This presentation examines some of the lesser-known gems, some of which have properties such as water solubility, hardness of 4 or less, opacity or extreme rarity, making faceting very challenging. Although many are common, finding examples that are transparent or translucent is often difficult, making them much rarer than most precious gemstones. The pure elements comprising these gems will be shown, along with some of their chemical reactions and unusual physical properties.
SPEAKER: “Dr. Art Friedman” – Has been a member of TGMS for nearly six years and is a frequent presenter. He has collected for over 63 years and has about 400 of the approximately 6000 known mineral species. He and his wife Erica perform science programs through the Pima County Library System.
